I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My research interests are in international relations, human rights, Latin American politics, U.S. foreign policy and research methods. I currently am working on a book manuscript tentatively titled, The Political Will to Comply: Domestic Politics and Compliance with International Human Rights Tribunals. Click on the Research tab, above, to learn more about my research interests.
I received my Ph.D. in 2010 from the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My dissertation, “From Paper Tigers to Engines of Change: The Effect of Regional Human Rights Courts on Domestic Practice and Politics” examined the role that international human rights institutions can have in shaping domestic politics. While in graduate school, I had research fellowships at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University and the School of Human Rights Research at Utrecht University in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Before starting my graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, I attended Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. I graduated suma cum laude from Middlebury with a BA in History and Spanish in 2004.
Originally from Stafford Springs, CT, I now live in Lincoln with my husband, Carrick Detweiler, and our family. I spend my free time traveling, reading (I’m always looking for suggestions!), and best of all, chasing after my toddler. Although I don’t get to do it too often anymore, I grew up skiing and snowboarding and taught skiing for many years at Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, VT. Since my time in the Netherlands in 2009, I have become very attached to my bicycle, and I’ve recently discovered Lincoln’s fabulous network of bike trails. I am also training for the Lincoln Marathon with a group called Team in Training in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. You can learn more about why I’m running to support this important cause and donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society here: http://pages.teamintraining.org/ne/lincoln12/chillebrec
